What We Think

Condition: Used, Good.

SP Luthier Notes: This instrument has a crack in the body that has been sealed and is pictured. This instrument was sent back to Santa Cruz at some point for a neck reset, at which point a wedge was factory installed under the pickguard by Santa Cruz. The stability of all repairs and cracks has been confirmed. No further work was required.

We knew we liked the incredible power and versatility of the H model by Santa Cruz and we knew we liked the warm, open sound of their 1929 all-mahogany OOs...why not combine the two?  And why not torrefy the top, back, and sides?  The result is like that curious feeling that happens on walks in the woods where the forest (a deep, dark, ancient forest, in this case) feels like it's breathing all around you.  That natural woody, airy sound of mahogany is further concentrated and embellished with more bloom and a slight longer decay than usual through the torrefaction process.  The wonderfully full dynamic spectrum of the H model serves to deepen and expand that organic tonality into a sound that will fill you and the room you're in unlike any other.

Compared to other all-hog small-bodied guitars, this H14 has significantly less mid-range honk in favor of the aforementioned nuance from bass to treble--the torrefied mahogany in this case makes the H model sound more like a cello than a baby grand. As with all H models, this one's going to appeal to flat- and finger-pickers alike.  Call us up today to find out more about what makes this fantastic guitar one of our favorites so far from Santa Cruz!

Spotlight on Torrefied Guitars: Santa Cruz H14, Bourgeois Piccolo Parlor & Furch D34-AR

In this video our acoustic guitar experts present 3 of their favorite torrefied acoustic guitars; the Santa Cruz H14 Torrefied Mahogany Acoustic #1604, the Bourgeois Aged Tone Addy/Brazilian RW Piccolo Parlor Guitar, and the Furch/Stonebridge D34-AR Addy/RW Dreadnought Acoustic #64566.

Manufacturer's Description from Santa Cruz

Long an honored presence in the Santa Cruz collection, the 1930’s inspired H Model joined our catalog in 1977 during the formative years of the company. This was a challenging era to introduce a non-Dreadnought, non-12-fret guitar. Opting to be favored by natural selection, SCGC presented the now standard 14 frets to the body configuration to an audience that valued the additional 2-fret access on such a classic, vintage body.

Most players are astonished when they play the Santa Cruz H for the first time. Its volume is startling for a small-bodied guitar. The body’s depth allows for a much larger presence than would be expected in an instrument of its size. The guitar’s balanced hand voicing gives the H a precise response at every fretboard position. This model is highly recommended for those who prefer the sweetness and ease of playing a small guitar but require more comfort and volume.

About Manufacturer

Interested in building your custom Santa Cruz with us? Email us at acoustics@soundpure.com, or call us at (919) 682-5552! Richard Hoover began building guitars and carved-top mandolins in 1972. By 1976 his focus was on the modern steel string guitar. The task of becoming a master at all aspects of guitar making is a lifelong pursuit, and Richard has patiently refined his craftsmanship and knowledge as his company has grown. It was and is Richard's intent to translate his skills and sensitivities as an individual builder to an exceptional team of craftspeople, each of whom could become an expert in their specialty. Richard's style of allowing his craftspeople to interpret his vision has propelled Santa Cruz Guitar Company to the forefront of modern guitar making. Each Santa Cruz guitar receives an extraordinary amount of individual attention due to our "bench style" of building, which necessitates that each worker not only perform his own specialty, but also review the work of those who have completed stages before him. Over half of all the instruments that we build are custom orders, reflecting to a high degree the personality and unique playing needs of the buyer. Every guitar top is graduated and tuned by hand to attain maximum resonance and sustain, ensuring a high level of consistency of sound within each standard model line as well as the ability for custom voicing. The balance, tone, volume, and response of a Santa Cruz guitar are established before the guitar is strung. By limiting the number of instruments built, we can practice a style of lutherie born from a genuine love of the guitar, as opposed to a production line approach that might favor greater numbers at the expense of our attention to detail. We believe that our approach ensures that every Santa Cruz guitar is exceptional. Our intent is to create a uniquely sophisticated instrument that will inspire and challenge its owner throughout a lifetime.
