Retro Doublewide Tube Compressor - Part 1: Stand Up Bass

The Retro Doublewide 500 Series Tube Compressor delivers the tube compression sound you expect because it has four actual variable-mu tubes under the hood and excels at processing delicate sources like bass and vocals. In the first video of our Retro Doublewide series, SoundPure Recording Engineer, Allen Palmer, starts us off with the Retro on Stand Up Bass. The Retro Doublewide is available for SoundPure’s Try-Before-You-Buy Program, so if you want to hear how it sounds in your studio with your gear, shoot us an email at ProAudio@SoundPure.com. If you like what you hear, check out all the gear used in this video at SoundPure.com or give us a call anytime at 919.682.5552. Thanks for watching!

Manufacturer's Description from Retro

The DOUBLEWIDE II is a single-channel compressor that installs into two slots of a standard 500 series rack yet it requires only 130-milliamps of current—just like the original Retro DOUBLEWIDE compressor. Also retained from the original are the gray painted front panel, high-quality US-made Simpson gain- reduction meter, and hand wiring throughout (no troublesome ribbon cables). DOUBLEWIDE II’s excellent build-quality is apparent starting with the American-made PC board and extends to the durable and attractive stainless steel case and, don’t forget, we only use Cinemag’s highest-quality input and output transformers for authentic tone and weight plus the complete freedom from external interference and noise. During initial user testing and comparison, the DOUBLEWIDE II immediately exceeded all expectations with increased flexibility and control that many original DOUBLEWIDE users have demanded. With both faster attack and release (recovery) times now possible, the DOUBLEWIDE II excels at energizing vocal tracks as well as controlling bass, guitars and drum tracks in an elegant and transparent way or go extreme and radical—or dial in anywhere in between!

About Manufacturer

Retro Instruments was founded by Phil Moore in 2006 to re-introduce classic-quality tube audio products to the professional recording industry. The initial product brought to market was a re-creation of the classic Gates Sta-Level, re-designed by Phil simply because it was his favorite piece of gear and he wanted to recreate it for the modern market. Over the years, Retro has evolved into a company with a diverse and extensive portfolio including re-imagined vintage products that are used by award-winning recording professionals around the world.
