In an ongoing quest for new sounds, Meinl has developed what may be one of their best options yet inside the Extra Dry series. Stepping away from the traditional lathing style on top of the cymbals, Meinl opted for the raw and tightly hammered look. The hammering adds focus and a trashy quality that is rarely achieved in modern cymbals. The lathed undersides knock down some weight and adds to the dark and smokey sounds.
Living up to their name, these cymbals are extremely dry, with low-pitched, trashy sounds and short sustain. The raw unlathed surfaces and extensive hand hammering suggest that their sound might be loud and fierce. In reality, the Extra Dry series reveals its dark, earthy tones and comes to life when played at lower volumes.Extra Dry cymbals have big hammer marks which—in combination with the untreated, natural finish—enable an extremely dark sound with a short sustain. They exhibit dominant lows with an esoteric character.
Only MEINL uses 6 different alloys for crafting cymbals, which is more than any other cymbal maker is using today. Because of that, we are able to offer the widest selection of basic cymbal sound characteristics available. Striving for the realization of any possible sound idea makes it necessary to have this diversity, the background in and knowledge of all those different materials.
