The DW Santa Monica Series is DW's way of paying hommage to the classic Camco sound. Utilizing thicker plies of maple, they have a crafted a 6 ply maple shell with 6 ply reinforcing rings to recreate that magical sound. This woodier tone delivers a fatter tone with a bit more focus for you more dynamic players and projection for you heavy-handed players. As with all DW drums, you'll have some of the best hardware like the True Pitch 50 tension rods, the 3.0mm True Hoop, DW's Mag throw-off, and their 3-position butt plate to help you achieve your sound. In the medium tuning range, this snare has plenty of body and bite. At the low end of the range this drum has the fat and sag of a 70's era drum sound but with a modern polish. In the high tuning range, the drum offers great crack and projection without sacrificing body. Rounding out the package is a horizontal grain Padauk outer veneer that has a visually striking appearance and perfectly complements the chrome hardware.

In experimenting with different exotic woods as alternate shell making materials, DW's Custom Shell Shop discovered that in addition to the different tonal qualities inherent in every unique type of wood, slight alterations in the shell's construction can also greatly influence sound. Some of the woods sampled possessed a vertical grain pattern that when tested, dramatically lowered the pitch of the shell. Thus, VLT (Vertical Low Timbre) was born. For those players who prefer a lower overall tone while still maintaining maximum resonance and attack, VLT can be ordered as an option on all Collector's Series Maple Drums.
