  Noise Reduction is used when engineers hear a general hiss or any other type of undesired noise that is present in their mix. With noise reduction an engineer can cut those unwanted noises out of his mix, making the overall sound more clean and enjoyable. Adding too much reduction can end up distorting your mix, but when noise reduction is added with the right amount the end result is fantastic.
