What We Think
Live Custom drums pick up where Live Oak Custom left off, but the key difference is the slightly thicker shells, with individual ply thickness being beefed up by 10 percent to 1.2mm thickness. They have also upgraded the lugs to Absolute lugs which are attached to the shell by a single bolt as opposed to the two bolt previous version helping minimize weight and shell contact.
The sound and feel of the Live Custom shells are dynamic, responsive, and woody. The shells speak with a nice smooth articulation in the higher frequencies and full-bodied punch on the low end that voice well from a dynamic whisper to pummeling tribal phrases. The oak's grain patterns offer some bold figuring that you won't find from their maple or birch counterparts. So not only does it sound good, it looks good too.

Live Custom series is designed with a greater focus on playing in live situations using 1.2mm oak plies that are 10% thicker than those used on our Oak Custom drums. Bass drum shells are comprised of eight-ply designs while tom, floor tom, and snare shells are constructed with six. The Live Custom delivers a sound with greater strength and depth, provides rich expressive power that exceeds your imagination, and features hardware designed with some new, innovative ideas that deliver incredible stability and reliability even in the demanding environment of the stage. Oak's sound is clear and well defined with a powerful low-end that shakes your soul. On stage, and in the studio as well, Live Custom delivers a fat, rich tone with awe-inspiring presence.
