What We Think

That gentle sunburst says it all, folks!  This J-45 inspired beauty is like a crisp, clear sunrise.  Warm, dry tones extend from a well-defined bass to highs that sparkle as sweetly as dawn's rosy fingers.  Flatpicking reveals a perfectly balanced brightness that calls to mind a hazy morning more so than high noon's piercing rays.  Bare fingerstyle accentuates the full, rounded mid-range and provokes a great earthy tonal character across the entire dynamic range.  It's a blues guitar alright, but more in the range of "Careless Love" than "Death Letter".  That's not to say this Jumbo can't raise it's voice, though!  Concentrated, powerful projection from the long scale length and rounded body means the VJ's light touches everyone in the room.  Give us a call and take this little piece of sunshine home today!

Condition: Used, Very Good - Top crack repaired by our in-house luthier (pictured).  The guitar was damaged in transit but has been restored to complete structural stability.

Manufacturer's Description from Santa Cruz

The Advanced Jumbo, J-45 and the iconic early 60′s Epiphone Texan were the coolest accessories that an aspiring cowboy singer could shoot for. Each one of these guitars was a favorite of several of SCGC’s veteran luthiers. As it is our style to interpret rather than copy, the Vintage Jumbo Model combines the essence of coolness possessed by its forbearers with built-in improvements from SCGC’s decades of lutherie.

The VJ’s Sitka Spruce top is braced and voiced for volume and the body is built with premium Mahogany for clarity of tone. The balance favors the bass to the degree found in the originals, not to the excess found in many from the golden era of the square-shouldered brand. What this really pretty face has over its predecessors is SCGC’s hallmark complexity of overtones, sustain and power. Look your best. Wear this guitar!

The Vintage Jumbo is the ideal Blues guitar. Inspired by the classic round-shouldered dreadnoughts of the 1940′s, we infused it with the characteristic Santa Cruz volume, balance and complexity to create a guitar that can cover a lot of different styles. The VJ is dripping with the kind of deep, rich bass and sweet trebles that really shine in chord-oriented work. You won’t find this one coming up short when you call on it for more!

About Manufacturer

Interested in building your custom Santa Cruz with us? Email us at, or call us at (919) 682-5552! Richard Hoover began building guitars and carved-top mandolins in 1972. By 1976 his focus was on the modern steel string guitar. The task of becoming a master at all aspects of guitar making is a lifelong pursuit, and Richard has patiently refined his craftsmanship and knowledge as his company has grown. It was and is Richard's intent to translate his skills and sensitivities as an individual builder to an exceptional team of craftspeople, each of whom could become an expert in their specialty. Richard's style of allowing his craftspeople to interpret his vision has propelled Santa Cruz Guitar Company to the forefront of modern guitar making. Each Santa Cruz guitar receives an extraordinary amount of individual attention due to our "bench style" of building, which necessitates that each worker not only perform his own specialty, but also review the work of those who have completed stages before him. Over half of all the instruments that we build are custom orders, reflecting to a high degree the personality and unique playing needs of the buyer. Every guitar top is graduated and tuned by hand to attain maximum resonance and sustain, ensuring a high level of consistency of sound within each standard model line as well as the ability for custom voicing. The balance, tone, volume, and response of a Santa Cruz guitar are established before the guitar is strung. By limiting the number of instruments built, we can practice a style of lutherie born from a genuine love of the guitar, as opposed to a production line approach that might favor greater numbers at the expense of our attention to detail. We believe that our approach ensures that every Santa Cruz guitar is exceptional. Our intent is to create a uniquely sophisticated instrument that will inspire and challenge its owner throughout a lifetime.
