Overview
The portable Paintpot, is a neutral 2 channel remote controllable microphone Preamp.
It’s based around our original Paintpot pre design, and even 20 years later, it’s hard/ impossible to find a more neutral pre available. It has a host of features to get the best out of any mic, and a wealth of digital output options to make interfacing to your recorder or DAW easy.
It’s got these main features:
- 2 independent mic pre channels with 1dB gain steps from 12 to 72dB
- Mic, line and unbalanced line inputs
- Low noise at all gains for a velvety background
- Precision phantom power to make sure any mic works properly
- Hi/Lo input impedance settings for modern and vintage mics
- Phase reverse for easy mic placement
- High current ouput stages drive long lengths of cable cleanly
- Local and full remote control
- Includes optional precision ADC, for optical, coax and balanced digital audio out.
All of these elements are digitally controlled and integrated to reduce the audio path to a minimum, but still retain great usability.
Optional ADC Card Installed On This Model
The Crookwood ADC card is a high performing, mastering quality ADC card, that can be fitted into any of our mastering consoles, or preamps. It is a no frills design that takes balanced analogue in, and provides AES or SPDIF digital out. Because all of our products already provide connectors, power supply and logic, the cost of the card is very low, ridiculously low in fact for the quality of conversion it provides.
There are many fine ADC s on the market, but to date our mastering clients have found this little card holds its own against other ADC s, old and new. If you have got one of our mastering consoles, it’s certainly worth purchasing these DACs to improve the overall quality of your conversion.

- AES or SPDIF PCM output from 32KHz to 192KHz.
- Fixed 24 bit output.
- Can be ganged to work with 5.1, 7.1 or larger formats. All cards sync perfectly to an external wordclock.
- 0dBFs adjustable by trims from 14dBu to 24dBu.
- Jitter immune design, will sound identical irrespective of whether it’s self clocking, or running off external wordclock – it just works!
- Nice sounding overload & clipping response.
- S/N and dynamic range of -119.5dB A weighted.
- Frequency response, as per outgoing sample rate/2.
A mic pre is always more than it’s specs, but the Paintpot performs well both by measurement and sonically:
- Mic Gain: +12 to +72dB
- Line Gain: -12 to +24dB
- EIN: >-126dB at all gains > 20dB
- THD: < -106dB, 1KHz +12dB gain, 0dB in
- Frequency response: -3dB at 3Hz and 300KHz, passively achieved.
