A Quick Q&A with Toby

Where are you from originally?

I grew up in Durham NC, two blocks away from Soundpure.

When did you first start playing music?

I started playing music when I was 7 years old. As a shy kid, I chose the drumset because it seemed like the drummers were always at the back of the band. As it turns out, that is not always how it works.

What brought you to Sound Pure?

My first visit to Sound Pure came when my entire drum set was stolen. I came to Sound Pure and the team helped me replace my set. Since then, I have come by for small things like drumsticks and to get opinions on drum sounds. I also had the opportunity to record in the studio soon before coming to work at Sound Pure.

What’s your favorite musical genre?

My favorite genre of music is modern R&B. This is mostly because the music combines soulful vocals with great drum and bass groves.

Top Musical Influences?

Some of my top musical influences are D’Angelo, Chris Dave, and Kamasi Washington. These guys all combine elements of jazz and Hip-Hop/R&B.

What’s on your wish list?

We just got in a lovely pair of Mario Martin T-Style axes that I’m pretty enamored with, and I’ve wanted a vintage Gibson EB-2D for about as long as I can remember.

What are your passions and hobbies outside of music?

I love to ride bicycles. Mountain biking is one of my favorite things to do in the world.
