What We Think

This guitar is, simply put, a glorious testament to the humble power of mahogany.  As someone with a deep and abiding love for all forms of country blues and American fingerstyle guitar in general, I love the super direct, organic tone mahogany is well known for, but the unusual level of refinement offered in this guitar is a sweet, sweet surprise.  Dana and the folks at Bourgeois have put together an instrument with an air of nobility and refinement in purposeful contrast to the more well-known, no-frills wood boxes.

The appointments speak for themselves--tasteful wooden rosette and tortoiseshell binding, Mother of Pearl fretboard inlay, delicate sunburst, and Nick Waverly tuners don't look one step out of place.  The real magic in this guitar is a result of the combination of some wonderful pieces of mahogany and Italian Spruce.  The mahogany's woody, earthy tendencies are crowned and elevated by the bright articulation native to the spruce.  I find that the similar Adirondack spruce often takes a fairly heavy-handed bit of flatpicking to really get a hold of the full tonal range--not so with this instrument. Sensitivity is its strength.  Fingerstyle guitarists who play with more pad than nail will be overjoyed at the clear, colorful tones that come bursting out of the soundhole--far from a mere dry, thumpety-thump!  Your favorite Mississipi John Hurt and Big Bill Broonzy tunes that sound right at home on more standard Mahogany boxes are gonna sing like never before on this powerful, powerful Country Boy!

Notes: This beauty has been cased for a while and the case lining has impressed itself upon the edges of the top a bit. It's only visible in certain lights, but we did our best to represent it in the photo gallery. It's never been owned, but we're no longer comfortable selling it as a "new" guitar. It's a shame, but our loss is your gain. Varnish finishes are quite sensitive. That's why they sound so good ;)

Manufacturer's Description from Bourgeois

Mahogany has a quick velocity of sound, relatively lightness of weight, and noticeable midrange overtone attenuation. As a result, mahogany guitars have their own sound. Warm, dry, woody, not particularly complex, but direct, lively, and famously easy to record.

Mahogany guitars are often looked at as poor cousins of rosewood guitars, but we politely disagree, dressing the Country Boy in classic appointments such as ebony fretboard and bridge, wooden rosette, tortoiseshell binding and nickel Waverly tuners. We also consider it worthy of the same diamond volute that we use on the back of our Vintage Dreadnought peghead. In addition to selecting only the finest quartersawn and matched South American mahogany backs and sides, the Country Boy is appointed with an Adirondack spruce top (Sitka spruce is a popular option for this model).

When Ricky Skaggs suggested the name "Country Boy" for our mahogany dreadnought, we all fell on the floor. We still wonder where he got such a great idea for a name!  Admittedly, depending on which Body Style is used with this traditional combination of spruce and mahogany, you can get pretty far removed from anything remotely "country" in look and sound.   Over the years we have considered changing the name but we can’t, it was a gift!

About Manufacturer

Bourgeois Guitars are defining the future of vintage tone, combining old-world hand-voicing techniques with modern innovations in design and materials. Built in a ca. 1850s mill in the industrial town of Lewiston Maine, master luthier Dana Bourgeois and his small team of highly skilled craftsman produce some of the finest steel-string instruments available today.

Known for tonal excellence, meticulous craftsmanship and top-notch materials, they are played by six-string luminaries such as Bryan Sutton, Ricky Skaggs, Sean Watkins, Della Mae, the late Doc Watson and countless professional and nonprofessional enthusiasts.
