What We Think

The MOTU LP32 is one of those interfaces that doesn’t really make sense until you’re dealing with a lot of digital I/O—and then suddenly it becomes incredibly valuable.

At its core, the LP32 is all about flexibility. It’s an ADAT optical interface, router, converter, splitter, and AVB network device all rolled into one compact box. That might sound technical on paper, but in practice it means you can tie together converters, digital preamps, consoles, DAWs, and networked audio systems in ways that would normally require a much more complicated setup.

What really stands out is how adaptable it is. Four banks of ADAT I/O give you a huge amount of optical connectivity, and the routing options are surprisingly deep. You can send signals anywhere, split outputs, convert formats, and build complex digital workflows without constantly repatching hardware. For studios built around external converters or large 500-series systems with ADAT-equipped interfaces, it can quietly become the centerpiece of the whole setup.

The AVB networking side is also a big deal. Once you start linking multiple MOTU units together over Ethernet, the system feels less like separate interfaces and more like a scalable digital audio environment. And unlike some network audio setups, the LP32 keeps things relatively approachable and stable.

We also appreciate that MOTU didn’t stop at routing. The built-in DSP mixer and effects are genuinely useful, especially for monitoring and utility mixing. The onboard EQ, compression, and reverb aren’t just afterthoughts—they’re practical tools that make the LP32 feel more complete in real-world sessions.

What makes the LP32 especially compelling is that it solves problems cleanly. It’s not flashy, and it’s not designed around boutique analog coloration—it’s designed to make large digital systems work smoothly and reliably.

For engineers running ADAT-heavy rigs, hybrid studios, or AVB-based systems, the LP32 is one of those deceptively powerful utility pieces that can dramatically simplify a complex setup while keeping everything flexible and future-ready.

Manufacturer's Description from MOTU

The MOTU LP32 is a highly flexible digital audio interface designed to streamline complex studio, live sound, and networked audio setups through extensive ADAT, USB, and AVB connectivity.

Built around four independent banks of ADAT optical I/O, the LP32 provides up to 32 channels of optical digital audio at standard sample rates, with support for SMUX operation at higher sample rates and individually switchable TOSLink optical S/PDIF operation on each bank.

Designed as more than just a traditional audio interface, the LP32 functions as a router, splitter, converter, and mixer for digital audio systems. Signals can be freely routed between ADAT, USB, and AVB network sources, making it ideal for integrating external converters, digital consoles, stage racks, and DAW-based production environments.

The LP32 supports 64 channels of USB audio I/O and 32 channels of AVB-TSN network audio, delivering up to 258 simultaneous audio channels in a compact 1RU half-rack format. MOTU’s optimized drivers provide ultra-low latency performance on both Mac and Windows systems, while AVB networking allows multiple MOTU interfaces to be connected and expanded over standard Ethernet infrastructure.

A built-in 48-channel digital mixer includes onboard DSP processing with modeled EQ, compression, gating, and reverb effects, allowing for low-latency monitoring and standalone operation without requiring a connected computer. The LP32 can also be controlled wirelessly through MOTU’s browser-based web app interface from computers, tablets, and smartphones connected to the same network.

Additional features include a front-panel headphone output with assignable monitoring, comprehensive LCD metering, word clock I/O for system synchronization, and 32-bit floating point internal DSP processing for maximum headroom and audio quality.

Compact, scalable, and highly adaptable, the MOTU LP32 is a powerful solution for studios and live systems requiring advanced digital routing, AVB networking, and large-scale optical audio integration.
