What We Think

Making music should never feel like you’re painting by numbers, but often times that’s exactly what it can feel like. The practice of a formulaic boost around 7-12khz here a routine cut between 300 and 500Hz there altogether can feel a bit stale. Enter the Kush Audio Clariphonic. This atypical EQ offers a unique and refreshing approach to final stage signal enhancement. Take the approach that you would normally employ to bus EQ work, then toss that aside and give in to the intuitive potential of the Clariphonic.

What makes this device unique is that the incoming signal is split between three stereo topologies. One routed straight to the stereo summed output bus (left untouched or “full frequency”) another through its Focus “engine” and the third through its Clarity “engine”. All three stereo signals meet in the output stage and are blended to create a delightful and dare I say magical result. Understanding what the toggles enable the knob to do is important, but it becomes less so as you listen and instinctively start to understand how the signal is being enhanced.

I’ve become accustomed to the idea that if you’re reaching for your Eq to boost you’re likely making up for poor environment or improper mic choice. In the case of the Clariphonic, which only provides a boost option, I found it was able to breathe life into a droopy mix and add focus and clarity to individual instruments. This isn’t the desert Island Eq that will handle any mixer or mastering scenario, but adding one of these to your rig will no doubt have the type of sonic impact that you can’t work without.
