This is a fantastic guitar for any gigging straight-ahead musician, solo hobbyist, or a wide range of versatile jazz-influenced players. The smaller body dimensions are a perfect compliment to the dual Kent Armstrong humbuckers, and this configuration offers a wealth of tonal options not found in the majority of hand-carved archtops. With two humbuckers, two volume, and two tone controls, this AR803-16 can produce just about any hollowbody sound imaginable.
This instrument really shines through a nice tube amp with a really great clean channel. Played through my favorite Victoria Vicorilux and the Jazz Suprema from Rivera, I can easily nail some vintage jazz tones a la Kenny Burrell or Wes Montgomery. Through an Acoustic Image Ten2 combo amp you get a rich detailed sound, and by rolling the tone off, you get something akin to Pat Metheny's signature rig. Turning the volume all the way off you hear a full, responsive acoustic tone and a huge four-on-the-floor Freddie Green rhythm sound. This is a true player's instrument at a player's price!
