SDC Microphone Shootout on Small and Large Body Acoustic Guitars

This blind shootout focuses on three of our favorite SDC mics, the Miktek C5, the Schoeps CMC6 with the MK4 cardiod capsules, and the Peluso P84. First we'll hear them on a small body guitar using a finger style technique, then we switch it up to showcase how they sound using a flat pick technique on a large body guitar. All four of these mics were run through our Phoenix DRS-8 preamps and Apogee Symphony converter. XY Miking Technique using the Peluso P84 SDC Microphone Stereo Kit

In this video we discuss the XY miking technique using the Peluso P84 SDC Stereo Kit on mandolin and dobro. The XY techinque is one of the few coincident miking techniques that minimizes phase issues as the sound is arriving at both microphones at the same time when the mics are arranged correctly. Because of this, the XY technique is an excellent technique for quick and easy recording setups or when the panning of the mics in the mix is not yet determined during the recording stage (the mics can be summed to mono or panned wider without fear of comb filtering). We chose the Peluso P84 Stereo Kit as our microphone example for this technique video to showcase one of the many miking techniques at your disposal when you purchase a P84 Stereo Kit with it's included accessories (stereo bar, shockmounts, omni capsules). Microphone Shootout: Vintage Neumann KM84 vs Neumann KM184 vs Peluso P84

This blind mic shootout comparison features three "84" style microphones: a Neumann KM184, a vintage Neumann KM84, and a Peluso P84. The Neumann KM84 is a vintage SDC mic with a warm, natural, and detailed sound. The modernized version, the Neumann KM184, features a slightly different tone and response resulting in some engineers preferring one over the other depending on their recording application. Because vintage Neumann KM84s are limited in number, relatively expensive, and can require some touch up repair work due to their age, the Peluso P84 was developed - which was modeled after the sound of the vintage KM84 despite being a brand new microphone. All three mics were running through our Millennia HV-3R preamp and Lynx Aurora Converter. We conducted this shootout comparison blind to rule out bias or expectations and to provide the most neutral comparison possible.
