On May 21, 2009 The Beast joined Grammy nominee Nnenna Freelon for a charity event in support of the Durham Arts Council at Sound Pure Studios. Following an interactive recording demonstration, The Beast capped off the evening with a performance for the attendees in which they premiered two original songs, including this one entitled Catalyst. This footage captures the intimate live show, recorded in one take and mixed at Sound Pure. The mics included the Peluso 22 251 on 6-time Grammy nominee Freelon's Vocals, Peluso VTB on MC Pierce Freelon of the Beast's Voice, a pair of Peluso P12 Microphones on the Steinway piano, Peluso 2247SE on Acoustic Bass, and Peluso CEMC6 Mics as Drum Overheads.

The Sony C800g PAC is one of the most well-respected microphones in the world that is actually in current production... it is also one of the most expensive. John Peluso, of Peluso Microphone Labs created the VTB (Vacuum Tube Bottle), with the sound of the C800g in mind. While they are not exactly the same, they do have some striking similarities, and we wanted to put them to the challenge in this vocal microphone shootout and microphone comparison test. We tracked both mics through an Avalon AD2022 on an amazing vocalist, Jeanne Jolly. One thing is for sure, we liked the sound of the VTB a lot, particularly given its $1,500 price tag, but, there's clearly very little bad to be said about the great sound of the legendary Sony C800g that continues to be a favorite choice on pop and hip-hop vocal recordings, all over the world. We conducted the shootout blindly, so that you could really listen critically, decide what you like and don't like about each of them. What we think:

We probably sound like a broken record, but seriously, John Peluso does it again! Peluso has added another must-have studio microphone to his amazing arsenal of microphones that represents his lifetime of microphone study. While this microphone was cosmetically inspired by the classic early German Bottle microphones, it is actually sonically akin to something much more modern: finally, we now have a modern-built, affordable microphone that imitates the sought-after sound of the extremely pricey Sony C800g! We love the C800, but it was time that someone did this, they've just become too expensive for most of us.

Since we sell both, we can say confidently that this microphone does the C800 justice- it is clean, airy, detailed, and bright, in many of the situations that we've tested it, it is virtually indistinguishable from the Sony C800 (See the Frequency Response Curve of one Mic Below). This is the first John Peluso-designed tube microphone modeled after a microphone that is still currently in production, and is in direct response to there every escalating price tag. Like the rest of the Peluso line, this is an excellent reproduction, and one that presents an incredible value to studio owners that want the Sound of the C800 without blowing their budgets. In response to the extremely high and rising prices of the Sony C800's, Peluso has built this incredible microphone at a price point that no one can argue with.

The VTB exhibits a very big high frequency emphasis to give the singer the ?Air? on the top end. It is a mic designed primarily for vocals, but can be used in the studio for instruments where you are looking for a top end emphasis. There is a slight low end (very low end, below 80 hZ) bump, just like the Sony C800. This mic was inspired in look by the vintage bottles of yesterday, but inspired in sound to the newer ultra high end Sony C800!

Description:

The design of this exciting new microphone is inspired by the classic German Bottle Microphones. The VTB uses innovative Peluso circuitry giving it an extremely low noise floor with classic tube sound. It has a strong and clean low end, smooth and flat mid-range, and lots of high end air. The Peluso VTB has 9 polar patterns, controlled from the power supply. It also has an additional switch to disable the pattern control system, allowing it to run in single diaphragm cardioid mode, giving it extremely pure cardioid characteristics.

The microphone comes as a complete system, with Microphone in Wood Box, Power Supply, 7 Conductor Cable, and Shock Mount in Flight Case. Hand built in the USA.
