What We Think

The Peluso P-67 has been a work in progress for John Peluso for over 2 years, and one that has been a product that we have been eagerly awaiting.  The production has had a few hurdles, in particular perfectly-mastering the sonic characteristic associated with the original vintage grill (which believe it or not has tremendous acoustic properties which defined the historic Neumann U67 for which this microphone replicates).  We felt extreme excitement when we got the call from John Peluso: “I’ve got the basket figured out!”  Now this might not seem like that much of an impressive road block, but you have to look at the full picture of how a microphone works.

The sound of a microphone is largely produced from the capsule itself (tube, transformer, etc), but there is of course more to it than that.  The pressure that hits the capsule, as well as the space around the actual capsule (inside the basket) has a HUGE impact on the performance and sound of the microphone.  Knowing this, the job for John was to build a basket that gave the capsule the same identical acoustic performance- not just the capsule, but even the air and pressure build up and release associated with a tailored perfect grill pattern, by design, to match the original air and pressure patterns associated with the grill of a vintage U67.

This is why we love John and his products.  He refused to get the design ‘close enough’; he wanted it to be dead-perfect.  Everyone who has talked to us already knows how much we love the rest of his product line, but for some of us personally, this is a microphone that we have been salivating over.  As of this moment, until now, we don’t feel that there is a really dead-on clone of the original Vintage Neumann U67, and this is just that.

For vocals, a great sounding U-67 can be the perfect choice, but we wanted this microphone for numerous other choices like miking guitar cabs, and other things like acoustic bass and brass.  Many of you will have noticed that we take pride in our guitar recordings, and a good U67 has been a hole in our mic locker that we are glad to have finally filled.  Yes this means that guitar tracks are coming, but vocal tracks should be up not to far behind.

No one is building a U-67 clone until now, so if you are like us and can’t stomach spending $15k+ on a vintage microphone with unknown history and questionable maintenance concerns, we invite you to give us a call and talk to us about getting a Peluso P67 for your studio!

Building a Mix Using Peluso Microphones - Part 3: Resonator Guitar (Pair of P-67)

The Peluso P-67 is styled after the vintage Neumann U-67 and is a highly functional and versatile microphone. The dual sided capsule in the P-67 enables the power supply to feature 9 polar patterns in an array from omni-directional to cardioid to figure eight. In the third video of our Peluso Microphone series, SoundPure Recording Engineer, Allen Palmer, uses a pair of P-67s to record a resonator guitar with absolute clarity and detail. The Peluso P-67 is available for SoundPure’s Try-Before-You-Buy program, so if you want to check out how these mics sound in your studio with your gear, shoot us an email at ProAudio@SoundPure.com. Manufacturer's Description from Peluso

The Peluso P-67 is styled after the vintage Neumann U-67. Produced from 1960 to 1971 the legendary U-67 is a key part of the classic sound of albums of the late 60s and early 70s. The shape of the dual mesh head grille and glass EF style pentode vacuum tube are part of what enables the P-67 to very accurately achieve the sonic qualities of a U-67. The P-67's capsule has dual 34 mm gold-sputtered diaphragms. The P-67 features two switches on the microphone body. A low frequency roll-off switch decreases the low-end gain and can counter the proximity effect of close range vocals. A -10dB pad switch for lower gain can be used with close range brass, guitar cabinets, drums or other high level sources. The P-67 is a highly functional and versatile microphone. Professional engineers know the "67", ask anyone.

The P-67 is paired with the Peluso MX-56 power supply. The dual sided capsule in the P-67 enables the power supply to feature 9 polar patterns in an array from omni-directional to cardioid to figure eight.

The P-67 features our heavy-duty 8-pin screw on cable connector. The large diameter pins in the screw on connector give a tight and secure cable connection designed to perform for a lifetime of use.

Acoustically matched pairs available upon special request.

Microphone kit comes as a complete system including: P-67 Microphone in a Wood Box, Power Supply, New-style 8-Pin Screw on Cable Assembly, and a Shock Mount all packed in a Flight Case.
