Manufacturer's Description from MOTU

The 8M Thunderbolt™ audio interface provides industry-leading dynamic range and large console style mixing. With 50 channels of audio I/O (24 ins and 26 outs), the 8M also supports USB 2.0 audio class compliant connectivity that is USB 3.0 compatible. Eight mic preamps are equipped with individual gain, pad and 48V phantom power, plus optional hardware-based V-Limit™ overload protection, which adds 9 dB of headroom above digital zero to prevent overs. Powerful DSP delivers large console style mixing with 48 channels, 12 stereo busses, and 32-bit floating point effects processing, including modeled analog EQ, vintage compression and classic reverb. The unit's extensive routing grid patches ins to outs, or splits inputs to multiple destinations. Use the 8M as a stand-alone mixer and control everything from the 8M's innovative web app running on your iPad™, iPhone™, tablet, smart phone, and laptop. Connect a second MOTU AVB interface (1248, 8M or 16A) with a simple Ethernet cable. Add more I/O with the MOTU AVB Switch (sold separately). Build an AVB audio network with multiple switches and sub-millisecond latency, even over long cable runs. Stream hundreds of channels among devices and computers on the network. From initial tracking to final mastering, the 8M delivers superb sound quality, state-of-the-art operation, and reliable performance.

Long description:

This box contains everything you need to turn your computer into a powerful 24-bit/192 kHz digital audio workstation. As a “hybrid” audio interface, the 8M offers flexible connectivity to your computer via ultra-fast Thunderbolt™ technology or class-compliant, hi-speed USB 2.0, with 18 channels of pristine analog I/O, combined with 32 channels of digital I/O, for a total of 50 simultaneous audio channels.

The 8M is equally well-suited for studio and stage, with or without a computer. As an interface or standalone mixer, the 8M provides 24 separate inputs and 26 separate outputs, including eight XLR/TRS combo style mic inputs with individual preamps, eight balanced TRS analog outputs, two 8-channel banks of ADAT optical digital I/O, and a front panel headphone jack.

Connect all of your studio gear, including microphones, guitars, synths, keyboards, drum machines and even effects processors. Record, monitor, route and process all of these live inputs using the professional on-board digital mixer — with no latency and no processor strain on your computer. Apply hardware DSP-driven effects processing to inputs, outputs, and busses independent of your host computer. Add Classic Reverb™ with lengths up to 60 seconds. Further sculpt your sound with gating, 4-band parametric EQ, and vintage compression modeled after the legendary LA-2A™ leveling amplifier.

Add more MOTU interfaces as your needs grow, connected to a state-of-the-art audio network using standard AVB Ethernet switches and CAT-5e cabling, with near-zero network latency, even over long cable runs (several hundred meters). Record and monitor up to 128 audio channels in and out, simultaneously, to a host computer through Thunderbolt. Route hundreds of audio channels among multiple devices and computers on the network.

Control all DSP-based mixing and effects, device settings, and network audio routing using your favorite web browser running on your laptop, tablet or smart phone connected wirelessly or locally to the 8M audio network.

From initial tracking to final mastering, the 8M delivers superb sound quality, state-of-the-art operation, and reliable performance.

Advantages of MOTU AVB:

Host access thru Thunderbolt or USB — MOTU is first to combine AVB networking with Thunderbolt and USB2 connectivity. MOTU AVB networks do not require PCIe slots. Instead, you can conveniently connect your host computer(s) through USB or Thunderbolt.

Support for multiple computer hosts — A MOTU AVB network can host as many computers as can be physically connected, with complete access by all hosts to all connected devices and audio streams. All computers and all network devices run in sync with each other, resolved to the network's master clock.

256 channels of host I/O — Over Thunderbolt, MOTU's AVB interfaces support 256 simultaneous channels of audio I/O (128 in plus 128 out).

Over 512 streams of network audio — MOTU's AVB network can stream over 500 channels of audio throughout the network. Each MOTU AVB device can broadcast eight 8-channel network streams and simultaneously listen to eight 8-channel network streams.

Exceptionally low network latency — Standard AVB network latency is 2 ms. MOTU AVB network latency is an astonishing 0.6 ms, even over 7 "hops" (switches) and hundreds of meters of cable. By comparison, Cobranet has variable (unpredictable) network latency in the range of 5 ms.

Star configuration — MOTU AVB employs a star network configuration, which is much more flexible than daisy-chain scenarios, which require dependency on all devices in the chain.

Web interface — MOTU's AVB system can be controlled from MOTU's control software, which runs within any web browser running on any networked laptop, tablet, or smart phone.

Wireless control — MOTU's AVB system can be controlled wirelessly through its web interface from any networked wireless device, such as a laptop, tablet, or smart phone.

One-click synchronization — Click the "Become Clock Master" button in the MOTU AVB web app for the MOTU device you choose as the clock master, and all other devices on the network immediately resolve to it.

Thunderbolt connection to host computer — MOTU's core system interfaces (1248, 8M, 16A, etc.) can connect to the host computer with Thunderbolt, which allows full access to the entire MOTU AVB system network, streaming 128 channels of audio in and out, simultaneously, even at high sample rates, thanks to Thunderbolt's extremely high bus bandwidth capacity.
