What We Think

Designed for the guitarist who "doesn't like compression" but does love sustain and bold tone! This compressor is an extremely musical compressor that is extremely responsive and full of clarity! You don't get the squashed attack like most compressors. You only get the fullness and longevity, which, let's face it, is what most guitarists love.

The newer REV-9 model adds an attack trim pot allowing you to dial in a more Nashville style pluck-y compression or the smooth compression you came to love from the original Mirage, making it that much more versatile! And when it's made in the great state of North Carolina, what's not to love?

Call or Email for more info. This could be the missing link "always on" pedal you've been looking for!

Fender 1971-72 Vibrolux Reverb Silverface Combo Amp Quick n' Dirty

In this video, Sound Pure electric guitar specialist Eddie Berman tests out the Fender 1971-72 Vibrolux Reverb Silverface Combo Amp (Used) with a Strymon El Capistan dTape Delay Effect Pedal, an FX Engineering RAF Mirage Hand Wound Pro Compressor, and a Suhr Classic T Antique electric guitar (#30205).

Manufacturer's Description from FXengineering

  • Transparency - There are no audible artificial sonic anomalies, imposed on the musical program. i.e., audible attack and release mechanics. You may ask yourself: "Is it on?"
  • Musical - The tonality of the processed music is very natural and pleasing to the discerning ear.
  • Compression visual indicator brightens dynamically as compression is sensed.
  • Studio Quality in a simple-to-use pedal.
  • Tough, Durable and "road ready".
  • True Bypass Switching

Performance Points

Pick Attack - The Mirage attack time is less than half a millisecond. That translates to one half cycle of the highest note on a 24 fret guitar. The attack begins clamping at the moment the pick makes contact with the string. Totally inaudible attack time! The compression control is so fast it will follow the contour of the envelope hunting for dynamic transients. This allows the natural harmonics to be drawn to the surf ace of the tone while limiting any transient spikes.

Attack knee - The Mirage compression follows the natural envelope of the musical source. No soft knee is needed to compensate for poor attack time.

Sustain/Release - The Mirage provides smooth sustain through the release without the artificial sounding aggressive gain compensation as many compressors use. As the musical note fades, the Mirage "reads" the envelope and contours the release smoothly.

Coloration and Transparency - Is it on? The Mirage linearity is virtually flat <1db variation from 20 Hz to 8 kHz. There is no induced coloration, distortion, hair, fuzz, or EQ to the signal. The Mirage transparency is such that it will also work well with acoustic instruments guitars, mandolins etc. Acoustic sparkle is actually enhanced!

Keep it Simple! - All FX Engineering pedals have the KISS philosophy. Set the Mirage controls to 12:00 and Play!

Specifications

Quick Start
Plug the Amp Cord into the left jack and the Instrument Cord into the right jack. Plugging the instrument cord automatically turns on the power to the pedal. Set both CMP and LVL to 12:00 and Play!

Controls
CMP - Compression - This controls the gain into the compression circuitry. The higher the gain, the greater the compression ration. The red lamp brightens when compressed signal activity is present.

LVL - Output Level - It is a post compressor volume control

Internal controls - Attack - The Rev-9 introduces this new feature to the Mirage. On the board you will find a blue trimmer labeled "Attack" this controls how fas the compression grabs the note. Turned CW = slower for more "pluck". This also cures the rare distortion from high output pickups. The second trimmer labeled R-LED is to calibrate the voltage to the red LED. No need to adjust unless using higher voltage power.

Footswitch True Bypass - Pressing the foot switch engages the effect in the signal path (Blue lamp ON), or by-passes it (Lamp off)

Power
The Mirage is powered by an internal 9 volt battery for about 20 to 25 hours of "jacked in" time. It also accepts a standard 9 volt power supply. Can be run between 9 and 18 volts. Uses up to 10 mA!
